So I had a conversation with my dad about one's passion and paying the bills. I asked my brother what he wants to be when he grows up, and he said that he wants to obtain a job somewhere in the medical field. I then asked if that was his passion. He never answered. With my dad eavesdropping, he told me that he supports me and my siblings to follow their passion, but also to be smart about it. My dad knows that I love to make music and write poetry, so he warned me about chasing dreams. He said that with the world so fixed on paying bills and earning an income, it is hard to follow your passions while being able to eat. He also said that with music, it is all about being able to make people give you money. The celebrities today have the same talent as the high school rapper dreaming of becoming big. The only difference is that the celebrities know how to monetize their music and image. He told me a story of how he also chased his passion after watching Star Trek and Star Wars, dreaming of becoming an engineer so he could build huge ships and laser weapons. He went on to study engineering at MIT, but was surprised that engineering was totally different that what he had imagined. And with the moral of the story, he said that following your passion may not end with the outcome you wanted. So here I am thinking about my career path and questioning about the two roads that face me: one where I study mathematics and science to secure a high paying job with the risk of not being happy, or pursue my passion of music and risk not having a job.
Decisions decisions...
