Only a Dream

Here's another poem that is basically part two of the first one

Only a Dream

It was only a dream.
With my backpack and boots I hiked
Across the country with a pencil in hand.
Finally, near the giant oak I visit every year, my pencil readies.
A white bark of wood on the ground
Welcomed my pencil, as I start to write, “Dear S…”
-but a rustle startled me.

In the corner of my eye, an owner and its dog,
Walking placidly among themselves, not knowing who
I was.  As I turn my head, my eyes met hers.
Like water turning to ice, I froze
And so did she.  A hundred men could not have moved me nor
Time age me.  Inside, enchantment was fighting panic,
Like angels and Death disputing over the dying man.
It took the strength of my soul to move my feet.

As if in parallel, we met in the middle under the oak tree.
Her visage was the most magnificent image my eyes longed
For. Greater than the wonders of the Earth, the stars in the
Universe, the unexplainable wonders.  As I have been
Waiting for Her
For a million years, she stood right in front of me.
To see her so close, so near, it was…I was in
Paradise.

Mouth opened, no words filled the void.  We spoke through
Our eyes, as tears clouded my vision.  She asked me, ‘with the
World of other flowers, why water the one that is being watered?’
And when I told her, trickles of sadness ran down her face.
At the moment when she looked up, I can tell she took my words
And kept it in her soul.

As the bright sunlit world started to
Darken, I held my hand to her face,
Heart to heart, mind to mind, soul to soul.  I wiped the liquid
Crystal falling from her eyes, seeing sudden eagerness behind them…as
She faded away.

I woke with my hand in the air, touching, just the air.
I would relive that moment forever, even if
It was fixed within repetition, as it was the only time
When time is perfect.
Now I sleep for that chance again, for

It was only a dream.
